Q. What is an insulated consumer unit?
A. An insulated consumer unit is one whose enclosure is made from plastic.
Q. When should I use an insulated consumer unit?
A. Insulated consumer units are generally used in domestic installations which experience very low wear and tear.
Q. What is a Split Load Consumer Unit?
A. 'Split Load' in general terminology means that one side of the consumer unit is protected by an RCD while the other is not. Now that the 17th Edition Regulations govern consumer unit wiring a split load consumer unit will usually have a number of MCBs protected by an RCD on one side and a number of RCBOs on the other. The MCBs and RCBOs will be isolated by the main switch and both banks will protect against earth leakage.
Q. What is a 'configurable consumer unit'?
A. A configurable consumer unit allows for any number of devices to be put on either side of the split load. For example a configurable 12 way board may have 10 MCBs on one side and 2 RCBOs on the other, whilst a fixed 12 way board will only allow for 6 on one side and 6 on the other.
